Chapter 9 blog

Using multimedia technology in the classroom can be used for multiple uses. For example the uses of basic media features of audio books, iBooks, projectors and YouTube videos are some effective ways to reach children and make your lesson plans more engaging to the students. These are simple examples that can be used and basic computer skills we should all have at this point.

The chapter mentions utilizing PowerPoint as well and this is also a basic tool we learn in high school.  Slide rocket is a presentation method used that spices up the boring PowerPoint presentation. It may seem too fancy and complicated at first but it is a basic program that really livens up your presentation.

I loved the idea of using podcast as an effective tool to use with your students. Providing that all the students have a base level to be able to use the method of delivery. In the same manner that we use the blogs for this class you could assign two person groups and they can make podcast about the weeks assignments. There are so many free resources out there at our disposal and we should take advantage of them. Teachers should be community activist.

Online community is a new area we need to learn to explore. We need to venture into the different areas  in able  to provide a better lesson plan. YouTube is a good video resource for the teacher to use. We first have to make sure to screen the videos and the links that accompany them to make sure the students eyes are not diverted to a site that you can get in trouble for.

  1. I love your idea about thinking of a teacher as a community activist. While educators do wear many hats, they are also responsible for the youth of an entire community. By speaking to them and creating lessons that incorporate their interests, such as podcasts, we give them a chance to think of the learning process as fun, rather than work This forum is relatively recent and students will be also be excited to be involved in something that is fresh and innovative.

  2. I agree with you that using materials such a youtube and iPads can be useful in the classroom. I feel that youtube is a more useful resource because not everyone that teaches will be able to use a iPad in their class. Youtube is a great resource because of thie diverse range of videos that are available. I cannot think of a topic that a teacher coulde be teaching that would not have a video associated with it on youtube. I am unfamiliar with slide rocket and will certainly check it out because I feel that PowerPoint is a great tool to use as a teacher.

  3. Hi Jay,

I loved your idea about having students make Podcasts every two weeks about the topics they are learning. By working together with a partner they will be able to learn how to work effectively as a pair, which will also foster their communication skills. The best part about this idea, however, is that it asks students to teach others about what they are learning. From my experience, I never truly understand something until I have tried to explain it to someone else, and students would be doing just that with the project you mentioned. It also helps them remember the material. By making it a long-term assignment, you would teach your students about the value of working on something for a long time and making a commitment. Overall, I think this is an excellent idea that I would be excited to hear about as a fellow pre-service teacher.

  4. The online community is definitely something that can be exploited in the classroom. I think the utilization of ibooks, powerpoints, etc could be both a positive and negative thing. I personally am a proponent of physical books rather than reading on a kindle, ipad, etc. However, the future may deem it neccessary for it to be the standard.
